DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Health Department has seen a recent increase in flu activity and in reports of influenza associated hospitalizations.
This trend is mirroring what is happening in surrounding counties and what is going on across the country as well.
Interim Health Officer Jeff Kindrai reminds people that it is not too late to get the flu shot and it is the best protection against influenza. Vaccination is recommended for all persons over 6 months of age unless there is a medical reason why vaccination is not recommended.
Frequent handwashing, staying home when ill and seeking medical attention early can help prevent the spread of influenza or reduce the severity of illness.
Symptoms of influenza appear typically one to three days after exposure to respiratory droplets from an infected person. Influenza illness ranges from very mild to severe, depending on such factors as the influenza strain involved and the person's susceptibility and general physical condition. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, dry cough and aching in the muscles and joints.
