MONROE - More than $2 million in Small Business Administration (SBA) loans have been approved for Wisconsin residents who suffered damaged from the June 5 flooding.

Disaster loans are available for home owners for up to $200,000 to repair or replace damaged property, according to SBA field operations director Frank Skaggs. Loans for up to $40,000 are available for damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates vary from 2.687 percent to 4 percent.

People must call and apply for loans, Green County Emergency Management Director Keith Ingwell said.

Ingwell said people should call the Federal emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at (800) 621-3362 or go online at www.fema.gov.

Residents also can call the SBA customer service number at (800) 659-2955 or e-mail disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Lines are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Business loan applications can be downloaded at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.

The filing deadline for property damage is Aug. 13. Economic assistance applications are due by March 13, 2009.

FEMA is warning people to be aware of scams. People should make sure they are working with FEMA officials before they give out any personal information.

FEMA officials never charge a fee for services.

Suggestions to avoid disaster fraud include:

• Ask for identification.

• FEMA will not require personal information such as a Social Security number.

• FEMA officials aren't allowed to ask or receive money.

• FEMA representatives verify damage but don't hire or endorse specific contractors.

Anyone who suspects a scam should contact FEMA at (800) 720-5721, (800) 422-7128 or (608) 266-1852.
