MONROE - Five Illinois residents appeared in court Thursday for their preliminary hearings on charges relating to a burglary at a Monroe business Feb. 14.

Alexis Marylin Beyer, 18, Diamond Rikki Madison, 21, Michael Lavell Bush Jr., 25, and Tynario Rashard Brown, 21, all of Aurora, Illinois, and Kneirah V. Johnson, 18, Montgomery, Illinois, appeared on felony charges of theft, burglary and misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property.

Beyer and Madison also face felony charges of fleeing an officer.

Bush and Madison waived their rights to preliminary hearings, although they filed petitions to amend their bonds to require lower cash amounts. Both petitions were denied.

Although Beyer appeared in court, her preliminary hearing was delayed until Feb. 28.

Brown was the only defendant to accept a preliminary hearing. Monroe Police detective Steven Gately reported the circumstances under which Brown and the other defendants were arrested.

The five were arrested after a citizen reported suspicious people leaving the Monroe Radio Shack in the early morning hours of Feb. 14, Gately said. The citizen followed the suspects, who fled the scene in two vehicles, until law enforcement took over pursuit.

The two vehicles were eventually disabled using spike strips. All but Beyer were arrested from one vehicle; the other, driven by Beyer, held three unknown passengers who escaped into a field after the vehicle was stopped.

Probable cause was found for Brown's case to proceed to trial. His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 28.

Johnson's charges were dismissed and her $2,500 bond ordered to be repaid.

The remaining four defendants' cases will continue to trial. The maximum possible sentence for Beyer and Madison is 14 years in prison; the maximum for Bush and Brown is 12.5 years.
