MONROE - A firefighter was injured Thursday evening after a car was engulfed in flames at a Monroe park.
Monroe Police chief Fred Kelley said a citizen reported that a car was on fire at 8:46 p.m. at Honey Creek Park.
Monroe police officers and the Monroe Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze within 5 minutes, but Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits said a firefighter was injured in the process.
"He suffered a fracture," Smits said of the injured firefighter.
The car was completely destroyed by the flames.
Smits said the fire was "suspicious" and that the Monroe Police would continue to investigate the fire as a criminal investigation. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
