MONROE - The cause of a fire at a northside apartment building early Tuesday, Oct. 30, remains under investigation.
Firefighters responded at about 3:15 a.m. to a report of a fire in one apartment's kitchen at 2425 4th Street, according to the Monroe Fire Department.
A tenant in the apartment was trapped on his second-floor balcony when firefighters arrived and were able to rescue him. The fire was contained to his apartment.
No injuries were reported.
Crews were able to get the fire under control in 10 minutes but stayed on the scene for two and a half hours. Three engines and one ladder truck were dispatched to the scene.
Police assisted in evacuating all six apartments in the building. The tenant in the apartment that caught fire was taken initially to the Monroe United Methodist Church and then lodged at the Super 8 Motel.
Chief Daryl Rausch described it as a "major fire" with significant and serious damage.
The Monroe Police and Fire Departments are still investigating the fire.
