ALBANY - Albany firefighters returned this morning to the scene of a house fire at W1210 Decatur-Albany Road.

A call for a rekindle came in around 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters responded to the original fire around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Homeowner Ben Matthews was awakened by smoke alarms going off in the home and called 9-1-1, Albany Fire Chief Dan Mueller said. Matthews was the only resident in the house, Mueller added.

Mueller said the house was "pretty much gone" when firefighters arrived at the scene and said the house was a total loss. The cause of the fire isn't known.

The Brodhead, Juda, Orfordville and Footville fire departments assisted the Albany Fire Department. Firefighters were on the scene for about six hours, Mueller said.

The Green County Mobile Command Unit also assisted at the scene.

Decatur-Albany Road was closed at County F and at County E shortly after the original fire call. A staging area for emergency personnel was set up at Atkinson Road and County E. Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said the Green County Sheriff's Department assisted with traffic control for about two hours.
