Fire and Ice Festival to feature new events

BRODHEAD - The Fire and Ice Festival will be held Friday and Saturday in Brodhead. This year will feature a few new events.

During the first couple of weeks of December until the end of the month, there will be a display of Christmas' past items at the Consigny Law Office. The display is sponsored by the Brodhead Historical Society from their own collection.

The Fire and Ice Festival will begin at about 3:30 p.m. Friday in downtown Brodhead with the lighting of the luminaries around the downtown. Stores will be open until 7 p.m.

The Brodhead Chamber will be hosting its first annual Arts and Crafts Fair at the Bank of Brodhead from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Vendor forms are available on the Chamber's website at www.BrodheadChamber.org.

Santa Claus will arrive at the Java House around 3:45 p.m. Photos with Santa, sponsored by the Sugar River Bank-Brodhead, will be taken from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Java House at no charge to the public.

The Square will host ice sculpturing by Zoli Akacsos, an ice and wood carver from Monroe. Starting at 4 p.m., Akacsos will be carving large blocks of ice into Christmas- and winter-themed ice sculptures.

There will be fire rings for roasting hot dogs, s'mores, and marshmallows, which will be for sale as well as chili, walking taco and hot chocolate.

Activities for children 3 to 12 years old will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall and will include cookie decorating, tattoos and activity pages that will be sponsored by the Brodhead Optimist Club. Face-painting will also be offered. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Freshly popped kettle corn will be sold from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in front of the Bank of Brodhead. From 4 to 6:45 p.m. at the City Hall, free horse drawn carriage rides, sponsored by the BID board, will go around the downtown area.

The Memorial Christmas Tree at City Hall foyer will be displaying photos from family and friends of their loved ones.

The petting zoo will be set up on the Square from 4 to 7 p.m., weather permitting. The decorated pets will be judged outside the City Hall at 6:15 p.m. Cindy Lou Who participants will be judged at the Harvest Moon at 6:15 p.m. Prizes will be awarded.

Wheels to Prosper car give-away, sponsored by Dusty Kubly of Kubly's Automotive, will be held at 6 p.m. on the Square.

Tickets are for sale at the food trailer for the 50/50 White Gift raffle or from people roaming the downtown/parade crowd from 6 to 7 p.m. The winner will be announced shortly after the end of the parade in front of Pinnow Pharmacy. Tickets are $1 or six for $5. The raffle is sponsored by the Brodhead Chamber. Half of the proceeds will benefit Brodhead's White Gift and the other half will go toward the lucky ticket holder that is drawn. Must be present to win and only one ticket will be drawn. If no one claims the ticket, all proceeds will benefit the White Gift.

The lighted parade will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, special guest Ronald McDonald, the Grinch, Cindy Lou Who contest participants and pets decked out in Christmas outfits and decor. The parade route will begin at the corner of 10th Street and East 3rd Avenue, turn left on 1st Center Avenue and will travel south on 1st Center Avenue, then turn left at 12th Street, ending at the Veterans Park area. The parade entries will be announced live. The parade will take place no matter what the weather conditions are.

The Frozen T-shirt contest is new to the Fire and Ice Festival. Participants will be handed a Frozen T-shirt in a zipped locked bag. Once the time starts, they will remove the shirt and thaw the shirt and put it on. The first person to get the shirt on is the first prize winner. The entry free is $15. First prize is $100, second is $50 and third is $25. Entry forms are available on the Chamber's website.

On Saturday, children will have a chance to have breakfast with Santa at the Decatur Lake Golf Course/Billy's Sand Trap from 8 to 11 am. The event is sponsored by the Brodhead Jaycees.

The Christmas Home Tours will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3 at the door or can be pre-purchased at the Harvest Moon.
