FEMA tours Green County

MONROE - Green County residents should know within a week if they are eligible for financial assistance to help recover from last week's storms.

Federal Emergency Management Agency agents, along with members of Wisconsin Emergency Management and the Small Business Administration, toured Green County on Monday to examine flood damage.

Green County Emergency Management project manager Tanna McKeon said the group visited homes in the Brodhead and Juda area.

McKeon said the teams looked at homes with substantial damage. Not all of the 100 homes with damages were looked at individually, she said.

McKeon said flooding has caused mold and foundation problems for some homes in the county.

"It's hard to see some of the damage," she said. "It's not like a tornado, where you see all of the damage right away."

The aftermath of the storms still is evident for people who live along the Pecatonica and Sugar rivers. Both rivers continue to spill over their banks near Brodhead and Martintown.

A flood warning continues for the Pecatonica River at Martintown.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports the river is at almost 18 feet as of this morning. The flood stage for the river is 13.5 feet.

"Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast," the NWS reported.

The flood warning continues through Saturday.

The Sugar River near Brodhead was at 6 feet this morning, one foot higher than the normal flood stage.

The river is expected to fall below flood stage by tonight, the NWS reported.

Area township roads remain covered with water and motorists are warned to find alternative routes.

In Lafayette County, the sheriff's department reports Larse Road, Cisserville Road, Pecatonica Road, Penny Road and Sargent Road remain closed. County K, north of Gratiot, has one lane open and is passable at slow speeds.

In Green County, County MM, West River Road and Tin Can Road were closed Monday.

Drivers should be prepared to find alternative routes.
