FREEPORT — Just after midnight on June 26, the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene of a fatal accident on US 20 West between Freeport and Lena.

The sheriff’s office received a report of a single vehicle rollover accident at 12:43 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies located a vehicle overturned and on its roof in a field on US 20 approximately 1/2 miles west of Rink Road. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at Freeport Memorial Hospital. The passenger was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital by ambulance. 

The names were withheld at press time pending family notification. The cause of the crash was also unknown at press time and is still under investigation. 

The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Lena Police, Illinois State Police, Freeport Rural Fire and Ambulance, Lena Fire and Leamons Ambulance.
