MONROE - Monroe Arts Center announced another exhibit to be on display in Frehner Gallery from Friday through June 24.

The exhibit "Painting in Paper" showcases the paper collage artwork by Middleton artist Jean Sandrock. Frehner Gallery is located at 1315 11th St.

Art has been a passion for Sandrock throughout her life. Her current work in paper collage is a culmination of her work with pen and ink illustration, calligraphy and graphic design skills.

Finding inspiration from striking textural papers, Sandrock "paints with paper" by creating layers of texture through the use of embellishments and fibers. The tactile quality of her work can cause viewers to wonder if the art pieces are fabric. The beauty of the color and texture of each paper used becomes the focal point in her work.

Sandrock is challenges the limits of the papers as her subjects include flowers, landscapes and nature as well as abstract themes. Inspiration may come from photographs, a feeling from nature or the movement in a marbled piece of paper. She creates depth in her collages by layering paper for a three-dimensional quality on two-dimensional surfaces that adds to the overall impression.

During her career, Sandrock has provided custom calligraphy services, large designs for church conventions and hand-drawn logo designs. In addition, she has created products representing specific themes (e.g. Christmas ornament designs), city-related designs for products from candy bars to mugs and sweatshirts and many original designs to celebrate family events. Her work has been published in "Bed and Breakfast USA," "The American Country Inn" and "Bed and Breakfast Cookbook."

In addition to the exhibit by Jean Sandrock in Frehner Gallery, artwork by non-professional artists participating in the 29th annual Wisconsin Regional Art Program competition will be on display in MAC's Wesley Hall. Sandrock will serve as judge for this competition. An opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Frehner Gallery. A brief gallery talk by Sandrock will begin at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This exhibit has been made possible by MAC Corporate Underwriter: Colony Brands Inc., and Season Media Underwriters Monroe Publishing LLC and Big Radio, with additional support from Michael and Shelley Muranyi; Paul and Sue Barrett; Kevin and Chris Callahan; and Lee and Chris Knuteson.
