FITCHBURG - Gun deer registration and sample collection stations are now set in the Department of Natural Resources 11-county South Central Region (SCR) for the early antlerless only firearm season in the chronic wasting disease (CWD) Management Zone (MZ).
A major change this year is the Disease Eradication Zones (DEZ) and much larger Herd Reduction Zone (HRZ) have been combined into one CWD-MZ with its outer boundary defined by the former HRZ boundary. Most of SCR lies within the CWD-MZ.
The four-day antlerless only
Registration>
All deer killed in the CWD-MZ must be registered no later than 5 p.m. on the day after it was harvested within the unit of kill or adjacent unit of kill within the CWD-MZ.
Landowner Permits>
Starting this season, landowners and hunters in the CWD-MZ will need to buy a regular hunting license rather than the $2 landowner permit, offered since 2004. A new CWD management plan now being developed will explore new landowner incentives. The cost of continuing permits within the new CWD-MZ would be more than $850,000.
2008 Deer Donation Program>
CWD-MZ hunters will have a place to donate their extra deer this fall. Local Community Action Programs (CAP's), food pantries and butchers have come together to form Target Hunge, which will organize the collection and processing of hunter harvested deer as well as the distribution of venison to needy families.
Hunters will be able to drop off their deer at participating meat processors as well as DNR-operated stations under the new Target Hunter program.
