DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Library Planning Committee, in cooperation with University of Wisconsin-Extension in Lafayette County, announce activities promoting Money Smart Week, held Sunday through April 25. Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign to promote financial literacy across all age groups.
Launched in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the program is now active in more than 45 states through national partnerships with the American Library Association and the Financial Planning Association.
Activities are planned for many Lafayette County communities. Local bankers, financial planners, teachers and community leaders from several communities will be volunteering their time during Money Smart Week, to promote financial awareness.
Scheduled presentations include:
On Monday:
"Senior Scams," presentation by Darlington Police Officer Tony Ruesga, at 12:30 p.m. at the Darlington mealsite in the Municipal Building.
"Scams" presentation by a panel consisting of the police chief, postmaster, UW-Extension and American Bank and Trust is set for 6 p.m. at Hazel Green Library.
"Learn to Save for Something Special" presentation is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Public Library, Darlington.
On Tuesday:
"Personal Finance" presentation by John Knellwolf of First National Bank of Darlington at 2 p.m. in junior and senior classrooms at Darlington High School.
"Saving for Wants" presentation by Mary Knellwolf of UW-Extension at 3:30 p.m. at My Friends House After School Program at Baptist Church, Darlington.
"Learn to trade for something you want" program at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Public Library, Darlington.
"Kids and Money" program presented by Nichole Hocking and Steve Winslow of the Shullsburg Community Bank at 3:45 p.m. at the McCoy Public Library, Shullsburg.
"Children's Finance" program presented by First National Bank at 4 p.m. at the Argyle Library.
On Wednesday:
"Scams" presentation by Argyle Police Officer Haley Sonsalla at 10 a.m. at Irma's Kitchen.
"Want and Needs" presentation by Mary Knellwolf of UW-Extension at the Darlington Elementary/Middle School with the first- and second-grade classes at 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.
"Fraud Protection" presentation by Heather Fitzsimons of the Mound City Bank in Belmont at the Senior Mealsite in Belmont at 12:30 p.m.
"Investments" presentation by Kim Havens of Havens Financial at the Darlington High School with junior and senior classes at 2 p.m.
"Saving" presentation by Mary Moore of the Gratiot State Bank at the Black Hawk Elementary School with second- and third-grade classes. Time to be arranged.
"Saving over time for something big!" Presentation at the Johnson Public Library in Darlington at 3:30 p.m.
"Senior Care Options - It's Your Choice" presentation by Lafayette County ADRC, Willow Valley & Shullsburg Home. The program will be held at the McCoy Public Library at 7 p.m. The program is for everyone responsible for making decisions for elderly relatives or friends.
On April 23:
"The History of Money" presentation at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Public Library, Darlington.
"Estate Planning, Wills and Funerals: What Are Your Options" presentation by Lance McNaughton, Jeff Russell and Audry Bennett at 6:30 p.m. at the McCoy Public Library.
On April 24:
"Learn the difference between wants and needs" presentation at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Public Library, Darlington.
In conjunction with Money Smart Week, several presentations have been done in April to promote Financial Literacy. Mary Moore of the Gratiot State Bank has done presentations with Black Hawk High School students in Consumer Math classes on deposits and loans; Shullsburg Police Officer Rick Moyer gave a presentation to the seniors at the Shullsburg mealsite on scams; and Police Officer Steve Allbaugh gave a presentation at the local café in Blanchardville also on scams.
During the entire week the Darlington, Hazel Green, Blanchardville, Shullsburg and Argyle libraries will have displays on finance.
