MONROE - From skateboarding rink to beer pen?
The Monroe Main Street (MMS) Promotion Committee voted 7-1 Tuesday to allow beer to be served at the Summer Fair on the Square event Aug. 9.
Sponsored in cooperation with the Green County Humane Society, the Monroe Main Street Summer Fair on the Square is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9.
MMS Promotion Committee member Tom Miller outlined his plans for the fair. Included in the festivities are a bounce house, dog demonstration, pie eating contest, dunk tank, bands, concession stands and a Monroe Area Skating Enthusiasts skating rink.
But after the high school bands are finished playing at 4 p.m., the plan includes turning the skating rink into a beer sales area.
At least two MMS members raised questions about the appropriateness of serving beer at a family event.
Committee member Dennis Dalton asked about serving alcohol at the event he understood to be called "Summer Family on the Square."
But Executive Director Barb Nelson said that name was incorrect. Dalton opposed approval of the plan.
At an MMS Board of Directors meeting June 9, Sherrill Kelley also raised the issue of having beer at the event; however, she voted for approval Tuesday night.
The committee voted to amend the special events application to the city to close off both lanes on the north side of the Square as a safety measure. Originally, only the inner lanes of the north, south and west sides of the Square were intended to be closed.
