MONROE - "It's one of the most exciting and dynamic art forms to experience in person, and this collaboration will give access to more people in our service area," said Richard Daniels, executive director of the Monroe Arts Center. "Not to mention the famous mad scene."

Daniels is talking about opera. The Monroe Arts Center and Madison Opera are providing discounted tickets to area residents for the upcoming Madison Opera production of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at the Overture Center in Madison. A free talk is scheduled at 7 p.m.

In its much-anticipated Madison Opera premiere, this spectacular showcase for vocal artistry features a plot filled with tragic love and family feuds. Set in Scotland in the 1700s, the Madison Opera production features Metropolitan Opera conductor John Keenan leading an international cast that includes Luz del Alba, Robert Breault, Quinn Kelsey and Madison favorite, Kyle Ketelsen. Breath-taking costumes, sets and scenery, lighting, choreography and the whole Madison Symphony Orchestra are all part of the show. The story is based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott: On the moors of 18th-century Scotland, a beautiful young girl is forced into an arranged marriage, but she's in love with her family's arch-rival.

This performance will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. Discount reserved seat Mezzanine tickets in rows D and E are $63. Transportation is not included, but MAC will assist with connecting those interested in sharing rides. For information contact the Monroe Arts Center at 325-5700.
