MONROE - The month of April will feature three exciting exhibits at the Monroe Arts Center. The main exhibit in the Frehner Gallery will host an eclectic mix of artwork from two Milwaukee area artists. "We are Such Stuff as Dreams are Made of," a line from Shakespeare's The Tempest, aptly describes the artwork of painter Beki Borman and ceramicist Darlene Wesenberg Rzezotarski. The combination of work reflects each artists' interpretation of their dreams. Borman, from Cudahy, works in mixed watermedia on paper. She uses the subjects of trees, plants and landscapes and works intuitively to merge the worlds of representation and expression. "I attempt to discover and show the journey natures takes, and create both a sense of place and movement." she said. Rzezotarski, from Milwaukee, sculpts with clay to evoke ancient tales and archetypes. Her extensive travels in Europe inspired an interest in mythology, folklore, primitive art and folk art which is evident in her "storytelling" sculptures.
Also, for the month of April, the Artways Youth Gallery in Wesley Hall of the Monroe Arts Center will celebrate the artwork of Monroe, New Glarus and Blackhawk High Schools. All area students and their families are encouraged to attend the Frehner Gallery exhibit on opening night and enjoy the gallery talks by the two featured artists. This is a great opportunity for student artists to learn about and enjoy the work of professionals while showcasing their own work in the student gallery.
The third exhibit of the month will take place in a portion of the Frehner Gallery and will feature prominent area artists who have donated work to the upcoming "Taste of Spring, A Celebration of Art" event. This event, hosted by the Monroe Arts Center will take place at the Ludlow Mansion on May 4 and will feature a live auction of these spectacular pieces of art. The public is invited to preview this work in the Frehner Gallery throughout the month of April.
The opening reception for all three exhibits is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. Borman and Rzezotarski will give a short Gallery Talk beginning at 5:15 p.m. to discuss their inspiration, techniques and to tell a few stories. This opening reception, with its wonderful refreshment table, is a free, informal, come-as-you-are event. All exhibits will be on display from April 2 - 30 and can be viewed anytime during regular business hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
These exhibits have been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter, Swiss Colony and Season Media Underwriters, BIG Radio and Monroe Publishing. Additional support was provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
