MONROE - Residents of Green County will no longer have to wait to dispose of medications they have around their homes. A prescription drug drop box will be provided to residents of Green County. The box, funded by a grant through the Monroe Clinic Foundation, will be accessible 24/7 and will be located in the Green County Sheriff's department by the dispatcher station.
A group within the current class of Green County Leaders have been working to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse and proper disposal of medications in Green County. The group conducted a survey, which collected a total of 325 responses, to determine the need for a prescription drug drop box in the county. The data shows residents understand the importance of correct disposal of unneeded prescriptions and understand the importance of disposing them properly; however, many residents do not know how or where to dispose of these medications. The results show that 97 percent of respondents had prescription or over-the-counter drugs in their home and 60 percent have expired prescription drugs. Among those who responded, the number one disposal method of prescription drugs is to toss them in the trash.
With the installation of the safe and secure drop box, residents of Green County will have the opportunity to safely dispose of leftover or expired medications free of charge. The box can be used anonymously and there is no need to check in with the deputy on duty at the sheriff's department. There will be an opening ceremony on May 14 and the box will be open to the public.
