MONROE - The 2009 documentary film "Latin Music, USA: Episode One, Bridges," by Pamela Aguilar and Daniel McCabe, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave. The film is the sixth in a series of seven film screenings being presented as a partnership between the Monroe Arts Center and the Monroe Public Library.

Each of the films focus on a different genre of American music, with each genre represented in a MAC performance. The series uses documentary film and a brief post-film discussion, led by a music authority, to engage the public in a study of some of America's most popular music. Films will be shown approximately one week prior to a corresponding MAC performance. "Latin Music, USA" precedes the 7:30 p.m. Saturday MAC presentation of the Latin salsa music group, Salsabrosa.

Narrated by actor Jimmy Smits, "Latin Music, USA" highlights the story of the American music created by Latinos, and celebrates the Latin rhythms at the heart of jazz, rock, country, and rhythm and blues. It's a fresh take on American musical history, reaching across five decades to portray the mix of sounds created by Latinos. The episode explains the rise of Latin jazz with the Machito and the explosion of the mambo with Pérez Prado, and how Latin music infiltrates R&B and rock throughout the 1960s, from the Drifters to Santana and beyond. Running time of the film is about 60 minutes.

Following the film, there will be an audience discussion led by Madison Latin musicians Nick Moran and Juan Tomas Martinez from 7:30 to 8 p.m. Moran studied under the bass educator Dr. James Clute of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, and studied briefly with maestro Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez of the Buena Vista Social Club. He completed his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Arts in 2004. Moran has performed with a diverse collection of internationally-renowned acts, including Ben Sidran, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Clyde Stubbelfield, David "Fathead" Neuman (Ray Charles' sax player), and has recorded and performed with master of afro-Cuban percussion and Grammy Award winner Roberto "Vizcaino" Guillot. In addition, he has worked with Madison groups Natty Nation, Harmonious Wail, The Gomers, Tony Casteneda, Anna Laube, Joy and the Boy, and The Tim Whalen Nonet.

All film screenings and discussions are free and opening to the public. For information contact MAC at 608-325-5700, 888-596-1249, or online at www.monroeartscenter.com.
