SOUTH WAYNE - Recently the Village of South Wayne received a DNR Stewardship Grant for development of its community park.

The total amount awarded was $67,447. It is a matching fund and all money must be used by 2012.

The main projects included within the Stewardship Grant include: Construction of a shelter house, construction of bathrooms with water and sewer lines, completion of a walking trail with installation of a gazebo, signs for the Arboretum; and construction and installation of a covered bridge over the waste-water ditch to allow easy access from school grounds to the park.

The engineer of the bridge is Richard Anderson of Darlington. Assisting with the construction will be the Black Hawk Ag construction class - plus other local volunteers.

The main groups involved with the planning of these projects have been the South Wayne Community Foundation and the Red-Cracker Music festival members. Other local residents have been involved in various fundraising activities and the village is hoping others will assist as projects are started in the spring.

A fundraiser for the shelter house part of the project is set for Saturday, Dec. 4.

A full day of festivities is planned, including a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, turkey and ham raffle; and a bake sale from 4 to 6 p.m.

Pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus can be taken at 7 p.m. There is also a buffet dinner and entertainment by "Lunchbox Super Stars" and DJ Sami. Advance tickets are $15 - children 12 and under, $10. They can be purchased at Marty's Village Inn, and Woodford State Bank.
