NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus school district expects to receive $700,000 in an interest-free loan as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to perform maintenance projects.

New Glarus was awarded a Qualified School Construction Bond Program loan, according to a press release issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). The program makes loan money available for school renovation or new construction.

The money could be used for a series of projects, said Tammy Marty, New Glarus business manager.

"We'll use it for things such as roof repairs, window replacements and electrical projects," she said.

The school board will discuss the loan, finalize how to spend the money and discuss when the money will be spent at its July 26 board meeting.

The federal government pays all the interest costs from the loans, which are administered by the DPI. In Wisconsin, 65 school districts received loans totaling $144 million.

Marty said the district applied for the loan in the spring and was surprised to learn it would receive the entire $700,000 amount.

"We were expecting to receive a portion of the amount we requested, not the entire amount," she said.
