MONROE - Monroe parents can begin registering their children for 4-year-old kindergarten Jan. 18.

Enrollment continues until Feb. 19 for any child who will be 4-years-old on or before Sept. 1.

The program is voluntary, according to Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy principal Tina Van Meer.

Children learn literature, math and social skills, in addition to learning how to work with other students, she said.

Van Meer said children who attend the 4K program have an easier transition to kindergarten; some children have a difficult time with their first few days in kindergarten, she said. They might not know many, or any, of the other kids in their class because they haven't been away from home or their parents, she said.

The program helps children overcome their fears, according to Van Meer. Children are able to experience a classroom setting, and they also are able to work with teachers and fellow students, she said.

The 4K classes are held at Abraham Lincoln school, St. Victor Elementary School, Headstart (located at Abraham Lincoln), Ding-A-Dong Pre-School, Rainbow Childcare, the Green County Family YMCA and Monroe Preschool. About 175 children are enrolled in the program this year, Van Meer said.
