JUDA - The Juda school district has a new captain at the helm.

Phillip Updike, activities director and associate principal in the Columbus School District, will be the next superintendent of schools, according to a district news release Tuesday. He will also be the school principal.

The board selected Updike at its July 15 school board meeting. Updike begins his duties with the district Sunday. He has a two-year contract with the district.

Updike will fit in well with the district, school board president Dennis Pfingsten said Tuesday.

"He's personable. He'll work well with our community, our teachers and our students," he said.

Pfingsten said Updike has a lot of "energy and enthusiasm."

"He has a desire for a long-term commitment with the district," Pfingsten said. "He wants to be here for a long time."

Updike received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is pursuing his superintendent certificate through Cardinal Stritch College.

He was also a high school principal in the LaFarge school district and dean of students in the North Fond du Lac school district.

Updike replaces Gary Scheuerell, who has been Juda's superintendent for eight years. Scheuerell, who has been an administrator for more than 40 years, is retiring.

Scheuerell's last day with the district is Friday, but he will be available to help Updike with the transition, said Carol Tallman, district secretary.
