MONROE - School improvement plans within the district have continued to grow and expand, high school and middle principals told the Monroe school board Monday.
The schools have worked on the "vision plans" for the past several years, superintendent Larry Brown said Monday. The two schools, as well as the elementary schools, will continue to work on their plans for the future: it is an ongoing process, he said.
The presentations by high school principal Mark Burandt and middle school principal Lynne Wheeler included building goals and what has been done during the 2009-10 school year to meet the goals.
The middle school has used coaching to help teachers refine their reading and writing strategies, Wheeler said. At first, some of the teachers weren't sure about the coaching. However, it didn't take long before they were asking for a coach in their classroom.
Wheeler said the teachers have been supportive and willing to try new things.
The middle school students have also worked on the citizenship within the community through a Jeans for Haiti drive, a food pantry drive and a benefit choral concert. The activities help the students learn about other places in the world and the importance of helping others, Wheeler said.
At the high school, new curriculum is in place for next year. The school added an advanced placement literature class and an advanced placement psychology class.
The high school also worked with the Monroe Independent Charter High School and the Monroe Virtual School to help provide educational opportunities to various students.
Burandt said it's important the high school work with other schools in the district to find out what works best for students.
