District considers property purchase

JUDA - The Juda School District is considering purchasing a nearby property, according to Juda School Superintendent Gary Scheuerell.

On Wednesday, the district's Buildings and Grounds Committee will consider the feasibility of purchasing the more than one-acre property formerly owned by Rueben Goecks at N2345 Spring St.

Goecks died Oct. 6, which left the home vacant. The property is owned by Pat Jordan, Juda, a stepdaughter-in-law, of Goecks.

"He was a good community member," Scheuerell said of Goecks.

One of the options if the district purchased the home would be to expand parking, Scheuerell said, but the committee still has to discuss whether the district should purchase the property. The committee is considering other uses, but Scheuerell was unsure of the other options.

"It would be a nice little area," he said. "It's a property that borders right up to our property."

Jordan said she was contacted by a district representative Wednesday.

Since Goecks died so suddenly, she said she had not given consideration to selling the property to the school, but would consider doing so.

"I didn't even think about the school," Jordan said. "We would be perfectly happy if the district bought it."

However, because of the short time frame Goecks' relatives had to determine what to do with the home, the family arranged to auction the home and property, Nov. 15. If the home doesn't sell at auction, or any possible subsequent auctions for three months following the first, Jordan still would be interested in working with the district, she said.

Jordan would not disclose the value of the property, and Scheuerell was not yet aware of the cost, but the district would have options to finance the home, he said, including a short-term loan, Scheuerell said.
