As a native of Vilas County, I have discovered umpteen reasons to love this corner of Wisconsin no matter the season. Here are eight of my favorite things to do in my neck of the woods come winter.
Play
1. Cross Country skiing and snow shoeing at Razorback Ridges Trails in Sayner
Strap on your skis or snowshoes and have a pleasant morning taking in the peaceful scenery and serenity of the Northwoods.
2. Lake of the Torches Resort and Casino in Lac Du Flambeau
Come for a show or stay to play one of the 800 slots they have to offer. You never know, you may leave a big winner.
3. Northwoods zip line in Minocqua
Yes, even in the winter, you can zip line. This experience brings you through red and white pines and ravines. Can you picture a freshly blanketed forest as you fly on through? Breathtaking.
Eat
4. Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters
This historic restaurant is famous for the 1934 shoot-out with John Dillinger and the FBI. Enjoy the exceptional food perhaps next to a window with actual bullet holes from the gun battle.
5. McGregor's Blink Bonnie in St. Germain
This restaurant may be small but it doesn't skip out on big time flavor. First, treat yourself to an old-fashioned and then order a steak. It is amazing ... trust me.

6. World Championship Snowmobile Derby in Eagle River
If you're up for kicking things up a notch, make your way to the World Championship Snowmobile Derby in the snowmobile capital of the world: Eagle River. (While you're at it, be sure to take in Vilas County's impressive snowmobile trails - there are more than 600 miles to explore by sled.)
7. Sleigh rides through Wall and Railroad streets in Eagle River
This one is a fan favorite for the kids and even adults. Two beautiful Clydesdales pull you through picturesque downtown Eagle River.

8. Northwoods Children's Museum in Eagle River
I can't say enough good things about this magical place. My children absolutely love going there. They really get creative and I love their ice fishing display they put up each winter. So fun.
