MONROE - A successful Rock County program that offers activities for people with developmental disabilities is now available for Green County residents.
The Developmentally Disabled Recreation Program began in January in Green County. Its goal is to offer activities for people with disabilities. The program is available for people who are 16 and older, program director Anna Anderson said.
Rock County has had a similar program for five years. It has continually grown and offered more activities each year, Anderson said. Anderson would like to see a similar trend here.
"There are so many people who can benefit from this program," she said.
The events give people with developmental disabilities a chance to be out with friends and to enjoy an activity they might not otherwise get to attend.
The program was made possible through the Madison Diocese of Catholic Charities with funding provided by the United Way.
Anyone can attend the events, Anderson said.
The first event was a bowling night in February. About 15 people spent a few hours bowling with each other.
"It was really nice. Whenever one of the groups got a strike everyone would cheer," Anderson said.
An event in March involved a hockey tournament at the StateLine Ice and Community Expo.
An event in Brooklyn to mark Depot Days is planned for 5 p.m. April 26, Anderson added. She wants people to call ahead of time to reserve a spot.
Some events are free but others require a minimal cost to help cover expenses.
Anderson said she wants to see the program coordinate with other groups such as Apostolate to the Handicapped, GreenCo, Special Olympics and the Green County Family YMCA to increase the number of events and participation.
The program is also looking for volunteers to help chaperone events, Anderson added.
More information about the program and upcoming events is available by contacting Anderson at (608) 293-1079.
