Detours leave some confused

MONROE - Tempers are apparently flaring among some motorists navigating detours due to major road construction.

One problem area, police say, is along 10th Street and 11th Street, between 13th Avenue and Wisconsin 69.

Some motorists are treating the one-way streets as two-lanes, rather than one, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said. Kelley said there have been at least two incidents recently in which motorists followed other drivers to their destinations and yelled at them for not allowing them to pass.

Prior to construction, the streets were both standard city streets that carried two-way traffic. Now the roads are designated as one-way roads, and it is taking drivers some time to catch on.

"My best advice is to follow the signs; slow down to 25 (mph)," Kelley said.

In the recently established 25 mph work zone areas on Wis. 69, between 6th Street and 16th Street, police also have stepped up traffic enforcement. The detour routes also are a priority, Kelley said. Extra signs also have been added to indicate that motorists must form a single lane, and police plan to ticket motorists for passing at intersections.
