Despite change orders, fire station comes in under $950K

MONROE - The westside fire station on West 17th Street will be finished for slightly less than what the city set aside for constructing the new building and remodeling a section of the old fire station.

The total project will come in at a cost of about $943,000.

The Common Council voted March 2 to use $950,000 from the city's $5.1 million in undesignated reserve funds, rather than bonds, to cover the cost of the new facility.

Fire Chief Daryl Rausch submitted five new change orders totaling about $20,000, which the City of Monroe Board of Public Works approved Monday.

About $7,500 of the new change orders were a result of mud infiltration during a 13-inch rain over a three-week period early in the construction this spring, according to Rausch.

Rain and heavy construction traffic mixed mud into the fill, and contractors became leery of the base set for the 8-inch concrete floor. Contractors removed 10 inches of interior fill and 12 inches of exterior fill in the driveway area and replaced the fill area with clean stone.

Electrical and plumbing changes resulted in an additional $7,900. According to Rausch, Alliant Energy requirements changed after construction bids were awarded, and vents and exhausts were rerouted to reduce the chances of roof leaks.

The board approved two previous change orders May 17. One added $21,000 to the project for additional excavation and concrete. A second change order saved more than $100,000 in sales taxes by direct ordering building materials.

Rausch said the contracts will be closed out and no more money spent after the change orders are approved.

Rausch had budgeted about $900,00 for the entire project. The project budget included 4 percent for contingency costs.

The fire department will host an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 at the fire station.
