LENA — Tensions were high in Lena April 9 when an armed subject entered Citizens State Bank before engaging in an hours-long standoff with police that ended when the subject was shot dead by officers.
A 911 call was placed from the bank at 9:14 a.m. alerting police of the subject who had then exited the bank and walked to a vehicle parked nearby, Chief Deputy Steve Stovall of the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office said. Downtown shops and the local schools were put on temporary lockdown during the situation.
Stovall said that an officer arrived on scene and saw the white male subject standing by a vehicle. The subject, David W. Determan, 52 of Lena, was observed moving away from the vehicle and firing his weapon into the air by a Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office deputy that arrived on the scene.
When additional officers arrived, including a Stephenson County Sheriff’s negotiator, the Determan spoke with them while continuing to hold the firearm.
“The subject raised the firearm in the direction of officers, at which time the officers fired at the subject,” Stovall said.
Determan was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital for treatment, but later died from his injuries.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 2 is leading the on-going investigation. No further updates were available by press time.
Responding agencies at the scene included: Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, Lena Police Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Freeport Police Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police, Canadian National Railroad Police Department, Stockton Police Department, FBI-Rockford office, Leamon’s Ambulance, Mercyhealth, Village of Lena Public Works, ISP District 16, ISP crime scene services and the ISP Department of Criminal Investigations.
The Lena incident occurred just one day following a shooting incident in Brodhead that ended in the arrest of 19-year-old Damian Brandt of Edgerton.
Brodhead Police received reports of gunshots at 9:27 p.m. and Police Chief Chris Hughes said that a preliminary investigation led police to believe that Brandt was shooting a vehicle traveling in front of Brandt’s.
Brandt was booked into the Green County Sheriff’s Jail on an initial charge of recklessly endangering safety.
