'DeFlocked' wins Times comics slot

MONROE - Readers of The Monroe Times have spoken, and they've chosen "DeFlocked."

After a 12-week survey in which six different comic strips were tested for two weeks each, the strip with the most positive responses - both in terms of numbers and in percentages - was "DeFlocked." Beginning today, "DeFlocked" takes its permanent place in the Times' comics lineup on the Fun & Games page

(Page B3 daily). It replaces "Kim and Jason," which no longer produces new strips.

"DeFlocked" is about four outcasts who are forced to coexist in the folds of American suburbia on a centuries-old working farm called Lubberland Farms. Behind the hay bales and fertilizer lies a secret animal preserve for displaced and disenchanted pets, including Mamet, comedy's most derelict, self-absorbed sheep. Mamet's outlandish behavior meets its reckoning with Cobb, the mature, sensible dog. Cobb's clueless brother Rupert burns with sunny optimism, which contrasts with the dark, semi-twisted antics of Tucker, the human boy who they are raising as one of their own.

Described by many as "smart, clever and oddly addictive," DeFlocked is a 21st century take on the legendary sitcoms of our time. The comic is a contemporary, laugh-out-loud family strip that blends the dynamic relationship comedy of TV classic "All in the Family" with a Seinfeld-ian outlook on the human condition. In fact, "DeFlocked" has been endorsed by the master of edgy, uncomfortable humor, Larry David, co-creator of "Seinfeld" and star of the HBO hit comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm!"

"I will happily be part of a new demographic for DeFlocked ... people who didn't read comics but do now," David said.

Artist Jeff Corriveau was the head writer for the television show "Talk Soup," as well as a longtime contributor to "Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update."

DeFlocked was chosen by readers over "Crankshaft," "Non-Sequitur," "Pajama Diaries," "Cul de Sac" and "Retail."
