DARLINGTON - A Darlington teen is charged in Lafayette County Circuit Court with sexually assaulting a girl.

Edwin Geovanni Ramos-Castaneada, 17, has his initial appearance Jan. 23 on a Class C felony charge of second-degree sexual assault of a child. The maximum imprisonment for a Class C felony is 40 years.

According to the criminal complaint, Ramos-Castaneada contacted the 14-year-old via her school email in October, telling her he wanted to kiss her and that he loved her. They made plans to meet.

About two weeks before Thanksgiving, Ramos-Castaneada picked her up at her house and drove her to a cornfield off County K, Town of Darlington. He then reportedly sexually assaulted her in the back of his car.

He admitted to an investigator that he had sex with the girl but said he stopped midway because he "started to think that he would get into trouble for having sex with a 14-year-old." At the time of the incident, he was 16 years old.

State court records show no criminal history for Ramos-Castaneada. In recent months, he's received traffic tickets and citations for truancy and trespassing in Lafayette County.
