DARLINGTON - A suspect remains at large after a Saturday morning fight that resulted in the hospitalization of a 20-year-old Darlington man.

The suspect, who the Darlington Police Department identifies as Abel Mendez Garcia, 26, Darlington, is a male Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes. He weights approximately 150 pounds and is 5 feet, 4 inches tall.

Darlington Police Chief Jason King said in a press release Sunday that Garcia may already be in Mexico.

At 5:55 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County, where the victim was being treated for numerous knife wounds to his face, neck, arm and hand after being transported by private vehicle.

The man's injuries were not life threatening, but required 21 stitches.

Initial findings revealed the fight occurred in a downtown alley. Witnesses intervened, bringing the fight to an end. But the suspect fled and remains at large as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The general public is not believed to be in danger. Darlington Police say this was an isolated incident involving persons who knew one another. They were arguing over a domestic relationship.

Anyone with information about the incident, or Garcia's whereabouts, are asked to call Darlington Police at 776-4980.
