DARLINGTON — Police continue to investigate a number of recent episodes of fighting around the city’s public swimming pool and some nearby basketball courts. They also are seeking more answers and reassuring the public.

“Frankly, it was pretty graphic, and younger witnesses may have found it disturbing,” the police said in their initial Facebook post on the Wednesday incident. “Parents who had children at the swimming pool last night may want to speak with their children….”

In an update later, police characterized the earlier confrontations as “an isolated and rare incident that involved a small group of teens,” who would be banned from the facilities.

Through “swift action” those bans are already in place, police said, adding that they continue to investigate the fight and its aftermath, while emphasizing that Darlington public recreation spaces are safe.

“If you or your child has video of any part of the disturbance, we’d like to hear from you,” police said.

The condition of the injured participant is unknown and officials could not be reached for additional comment late Thursday.

Police also said they were planning to beef up security at the pool. Posters to Facebook lamented the incidents happening in their small town.

“So very sad,” said more than one post, while another questioned why the person taking the video didn’t help to stop the fight.
