DARLINGTON - A 24-year-old Darlington man was killed and a 19-year-old Darlington man arrested after a car left the road, hit a culvert and overturned several times, according to Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley.

Nelson Villalobos-Silva was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas.

Eric Barraza-Martinez was arrested for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after he was found walking along County K. He remains jailed.

The crash was reported by a motorist who came upon the scene at about 2:30 a.m. Friday on County K about 2 miles north of Gratiot.

Pedley said the initial investigation showed a northbound 1993 Eagle Talon two-door driven by Barraza-Martinez failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, went onto the opposite ditch, hit a driveway culvert and overturned several times before coming to rest on its top. Villalobos-Silva was ejected from the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Barraza-Martinez was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Gratiot First Responders, Darlington's Rural Medical Ambulance and the Darlington Fire Department assisted at the scene.

This was Lafayette County's second traffic fatality of the year, Pedley said.
