GLEN HAVEN - A Darlington man died after he fell into the backwaters of the Mississippi River at about 9 p.m. Saturday in the village of Glen Haven.

Michael J. Kruser, 45, was untying his pontoon boat from the dock when he fell into the water. He didn't resurface, according to Grant County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ed Breitsprecker Jr.

Breitsprecker said the dock is located at the edge of the community, which is in the far western edge of Grant County.

Glen Haven firefighters were called to the scene and Kruser's body was recovered at about 9:30 p.m., Breitsprecker said. Kruser was taken to Grant Regional Health Center by the West Grant rescue squad, where he was pronounced dead.

Breitsprecker said alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

A Mass of Christian burial for Kruser is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington.
