Darlington hit by home invasions

DARLINGTON - The Darlington Police Department warned residents Thursday about a string of home invasions that occurred in Darlington in the past several months.

Since late February, three home invasions occurred in northeast Darlington at unlocked residences occupied by women. In two of the cases, the intruder was believed to have been in the respective residences at the same time as the female residents.

Darlington Police Chief Jason King said each incident took place in morning hours. The first incident took place at about 10:30 a.m., when the resident reported hearing an item fall in the home's basement. When she went to investigate the noise, she noticed the residence's door was open.

The second incident, on March 21, occurred while the occupant was away, King said. The resident returned home at noon to find an open door and some items on the floor that hadn't been there before.

The third incident took place on April 27. The resident heard footsteps at about 9 a.m. Believing it to be her husband, she went to greet him, but instead discovered the home's door open.

Police reported that nothing was stolen during the incidents, indicating that the motivation for the invasions was not theft. No other information about the possible intruder or intruders is known at this time.

King said the fact that nothing was stolen was highly unusual and left few clues to go on.

"Now that there are three incidents, though, it lends credibility to people's concerns," King said.

Anyone with information about the incidents is encouraged to contact the Darlington police at (608) 776-4981. The police strongly advise citizens to lock their homes.
