MONROE - How much different Monroe's Square looks today compared with 80 years ago is something Dennis Dalton was able to show at his re-photography exhibit at the Monroe Arts Center during Cheese Days.

Dalton, who has taken photos for several years, said he had the glass negatives of pictures taken between 1900 and 1920. He decided that to commemorate Monroe's 150th birthday he would print the negatives and take new photos of the same buildings to show people just how much things have changed. The photos also show how much some things have remained the same.

The sides of the Square have changed over the years as new businesses have come in and storefronts were replaced. Dalton's exhibit allows people to look at the old and new side-by-side.

"Some of the older people who came to look at the pictures remember when certain businesses were on the Square," Dalton said.

Dalton said his next goal is to print photos of pictures that show buildings that have since been torn down. He plans to take pictures to show what buildings were built to replace them.
