MONROE- Saying there's a stable administration in place, Green County District Attorney Gary Luhman is stepping down from the post he's held for 25 years.

"It's a good time to step down," Luhman said. "We've got a stable administration in place right now."

Luhman has served as the county DA since 1991. Before he was elected district attorney, Luhman served from 1983 to 1988 as assistant district attorney for Green County. In 2008 and in 2012, Luhman said he indicated that he would step down once his term ends next January.

Now 59, he said he prefers to step down earlier rather than wait another four years and said it is a proper moment to allow another to step in.

Luhman said current candidate Craig Nolen is the only person who has approached him so far with hopes to take the seat during the fall election. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 9 before the general election on Nov. 8.

"Craig's done a good job since he's been back in Monroe," Luhman said.

In a press release, Luhman thanked his staff for "their dedication and commitment over the years" and expressed how much he will miss criminal prosecution. However, Luhman said, he still has plans to move forward with law, and will "likely still practice." He added that pro bono prosecution is always an available option.

Luhman said he will also be spending more time with family, especially his four adult children and their families.
