MONROE - Cub Scouts cheered for their friends, good-naturedly bragged about their cars and strained to see the finish line Saturday at the Pinewood Derby at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

"This is the highlight of the year," Cub Scout leader Jim Hauck. "Everybody wants a trophy."

As three cars were placed at the starting line by Jeremy Hagen, the young scouts gathered on one side of the track to watch. They're eyes glued to the three cars ready to race.

"Three, two, one," the Cub Scouts, their parents and siblings counted out loud before the cars were released.

Younger brothers and sisters crawled under a table near the finish line to get a better view, while parents watched from the bleachers set up in the cafeteria.

The boys in Cub Scout packs 114 and 112 were racing for a shot at the awards given for top three finishes, best design and fastest car.

Brett Lyne, 10, form Pack 114, said he thought he did pretty good this year.

"I got a bunch of second and thirds," he said. He even got a first-place finish, he added.

This is his fourth year at the derby. Like most of the boys, he got a little help building his car. His step-dad, Dan Dunlavey, helped, he said.

Until the day of the race, none of the boys were sure how their cars would perform. That made the races exciting, Hauck said.

Hauck and Cub leader Lenny Wilde laughed and said there wasn't competition between the individual Packs, but there was between the boys.

More than 30 Cub Scouts took part in Saturday's race. The winners will go on to race against other Packs in Pecatonica, Ill., in a few weeks.
