Credit card thief may be from area

BELOIT - The Beloit Police Department is hoping the public will provide information about a man who used a stolen credit card to purchase items at convenience stores and gas stations in southern Wisconsin.

Beloit Police Capt. William Tyler said the man used a stolen credit card to make purchases in the Beloit and South Beloit area.

The credit card was stolen from a Monroe resident earlier this month. Tyler said the fact the card came from a Monroe resident is one reason why the department suspects he is from Green, Lafayette or Rock counties.

It's likely the man wouldn't be from the Beloit area because someone who uses a stolen credit card runs the risk of being identified as someone who shouldn't have the card, Tyler said.

"You don't want to go someplace where you could be recognized," Tyler said.

Other indicators, which could point to where the man is from, were not available for release because of the ongoing investigation, Tyler said.

The incidents, which Tyler would only describe as "several" took place earlier this month. He said the man used the card soon after it was stolen. "You have to use them right away before the person can discover the card is stolen and cancel it," Tyler said.
