SOUTH WAYNE - Three people were killed when a truck crossed the center line and hit an automobile at about 2 a.m. Sunday on Wisconsin 11 just east of South Wayne, according to Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley.

Richard J. Christen, 67, Monroe, who was driving a 2009 four-door Buick automobile, and passengers Carol A. Wenger, 70, Monroe, and Kathryn D. Olin, 65, Brodhead, were pronounced dead at the scene after a 2009 GMC truck driven by Travis J. Kirschbaum, 20, Glen Haven, crossed the center line and collided with Christen's vehicle. A fourth person in Christen's vehicle, Richard G. Olin, 67, Brodhead, was taken to the Monroe Clinic for non-life threatening injuries.

Christen and Richard Olin were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Kathryn Olin and Wenger were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Kirschbaum and his passengers, Neil R. Kirschbaum, 45, Glen Haven; Ethan L. Koch, 21, Cassville; and Joshua N. Kuenster, 19, Glen Haven, were taken to Monroe Clinic for non-life threatening injuries. Everyone in Kirschbaum's vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the crash.

Both vehicles received extensive damage.

Wis. 11 was closed for several hours and traffic was routed around the scene. Wis. 11 reopened at about 8:30 a.m.

South Wayne Fire/Rescue assisted at the scene, along with the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, the State Patrol and the Lafayette County Coroner's office continue to investigate the crash.

Pedley said the matter will be referred to the Lafayette County district attorney for review once the investigation is completed.

This was Lafayette County's fourth fatal crash in 2010. There have been six fatalities in Lafayette County this year, Pedley said.
