ARGYLE - A rural Dodgeville man died as a result of a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Wisconsin 78 in Argyle Township.
The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office was notified of the head-on motor vehicle crash on Wis. 78 just south of the intersection of Hillcrest Road in Argyle Township at 1:41 p.m., according to a news release from Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill. It was reported that both drivers were trapped in their vehicles.
The investigation of the crash determined that Patrick B. Calhoun, 72, rural Dodgeville, was traveling southbound on Wis. 78 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup when he was struck head-on by a northbound Dodge Dakota pickup driven by Mary E. Bernet, 34, Argyle. Bernet's vehicle appeared to have crossed the center line and was traveling in the southbound lane.
Calhoun was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette County Coroner's Office. Bernet and her passenger, Aaron C. Bernet, 38, also of Argyle, were transported by ambulance to the Monroe Hospital with undetermined injuries.
Mary Bernet was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated at the Monroe Hospital by Lafayette County deputies and released to be transported by ambulance to UW Hospital in Madison. Further charges are pending depending on the conclusion of the investigation.
Lafayette County Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by the Argyle Fire Department, Argyle EMS, Blanchardville EMS, Green County EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol Reconstruction Team and the Lafayette County Coroner's Office.
There was a detour on Wis. 78 for about four hours due to the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
