Cover crop field day covers seed, herbicide methods

LANCASTER - A cover crop meeting and field day is being held at the Lancaster Ag Research Station on Aug. 9 to provide information on establishing cover crops after corn silage and grain harvest.

Cover crops provide many advantages for grain and livestock farms. Cover crops following corn silage are particularly beneficial in reducing erosion, improving soil and providing additional forage.

Topics will include cover crop species selection, seeding methods, and herbicide considerations.

Presentations will then look at forage quality of cover crops and the use of winter cereal rye on continuous corn silage fields. University of Wisconsin-Extension specialists will be providing the latest research findings on cover crops and guidelines that help assure success with cover crop practices. The meeting session will conclude with information about cover crop incentive programs and the sign-up periods for participation.

After the meeting there will be a field tour of cover crops interseeded into standing corn. Interseeding of cover crops is one method of earlier establishment of cover crops that does not reduce grain yields. The benefit of earlier establishment is having greater ground cover going into fall, and better winter survival for over-wintering cover crops. The field tour will provide the opportunity to see how interseeded cover crops are performing and hear additional information about the individual cover crops established. Five species of cover crops have been interseeded in corn at this site.

The research station is 5 miles west of Lancaster on Wisconsin 35. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. There is no charge for attending this event. Register by calling the Grant County Extension Office at 608-723-2125 or the Lafayette County Extension Office at 608-776-4820. CCA credits will be available.
