DARLINGTON — A couple was sentenced in July to jail time after having their probation revoked in a case involving thefts of cash from Amish farms in Lafayette County.
Neil Patrick Husom and Stephanie Ann Husom, both 28, were convicted in February and sentenced to one year on probation. Neil pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor trespassing. Stephanie pleaded no contest to two counts of misdemeanor trespassing.
But their probation was revoked after police reported continuing evidence that they were stealing. Neil currently has pending cases in Sauk and Iowa counties alleging similar types of thefts. The Husoms have lived in Monroe and South Wayne. Court records show a most recent address for him in North Freedom.
Neil was sentenced to 90 days in jail, concurrent with other sentences. He is in the state prison in Waupun. Stephanie was sentenced to nine months in jail, to be served at the Lafayette County Jail. She is eligible for Huber release to go to work or to alcohol or other drug treatment or counseling.
Their Lafayette County cases stem from a stealing spree from Amish farms in the towns of Wiota, Lamont and Elk Grove between April and June 2018. According to court records, the Husoms worked together to take cash from the containers the farmers put out for customers to pay on the honor system for baked goods, honey, candles and greenhouse vegetables.
The Husoms have a history of theft convictions in the area. In letters to a Green County judge last year, Neil wrote that he has battled a drug addiction since 2006 and asked for leniency because his children and wife need him at home.
“I was not in the right state of mind due to a drug addiction,” he wrote. “I’m not trying to use this as an excuse or a crutch, I just want you to understand where I am coming from. ... I’m not a bad person, I’ve just made bad decisions.”
