DARLINGTON - A Sauk City couple face charges for allegedly stealing items valued at more than $5,000 from a Darlington man whose residence one of them was authorized to enter for work.

Ashley C. Wilson, 29, and Tyrone Peterson, 41, each face felony charges of theft of movable property and burglary of a building or dwelling, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday in Lafayette County Circuit Court.

Several dozen items were reportedly taken, including cash, jewelry, silverware, a snow blower and video game consoles and games.

The victim told police he was gone for 12 days in March and upon returning, immediately noticed several things were missing. Two days after he returned, he told investigators, he again came home to find some of his belongings had been taken or moved.

Both times, two new cigarette butts were left in an ash tray in the residence, according to the complaint.

The man contacted his mortgage holder, police records indicate, and learned Baraboo-based TTH Real Property Services had winterized the residence while he was away. Wilson was reportedly listed as TTH's contact person.

Police called Wilson on March 31. She told them she entered the residence by herself March 16, performed winterization services and left without taking any property. She said she did not return to the residence, court records indicate.

Investigators mentioned the cigarette butts and asked if her DNA or that of someone she was with would turn up on them. Wilson admitted to lying and told police Peterson, her fiancé, was also in the residence March 16.

In early May police used the service LeadsOnline to determine whether Wilson or Peterson pawned any of the items the victim alleged were stolen. They received a report showing Peterson pawned 18 items at Madison stores in late March. The victim identified all items listed on the report as belonging to him, according to police documents.

Wilson and Peterson will make their initial appearances in court July 6.
