MONROE - The Green County Treasurer's office is dedicating this week, Monday, May 14 to Friday, May 18, to verify that all eligible real estate property owners received the lottery credit on their 2011 tax bills. Last year, the average lottery credit in Green County was approximately $100. The exact amount is based on the school district in which a taxpayer's home is located.
To qualify for the lottery and gaming credit, an owner must be a Wisconsin resident; the owner of the dwelling; and use the dwelling as their primary residence as of Jan. 1, 2011. If temporarily absent, typically for a period no longer than six months (due to hospitalization, vacation or incarceration), it is the home to which the owner returns. "Principal dwelling" means any dwelling used by the owner of the dwelling as his/her primary residence. A property owner may claim only one primary residence.
The lottery credit can only be obtained by having a signed application on file. The treasurer's office can help property owners who did not receive the credit complete the paperwork and file the forms with the Department of Revenue to claim the late lottery credit and ensure that the credit is applied to the 2012 tax bill.
The treasurer's office also has a link on the county website that allows eligible taxpayers to verify that they have received the lottery credit. The website is www.co.green.wi.gov; click on the link for 2011 Lottery Credit Information.
If you did not receive the credit and you meet the qualifications, follow the instructions to file for the late lottery credit, or contact the treasurer's office at (608) 328-9435 or email shawkins@greencountywi.org. The treasurer's office will assist you in completing the necessary paperwork to receive the credit for this year and next year's tax bill.
If you were not a resident of your property on Jan. 1, 2011 but were as of Jan. 1, 2012, you may qualify for the credit on your 2012 tax bill. You should complete the 2012 application. The application along with instructions can be obtained on the county's website by clicking on 2012 Lottery Credit Application.
