MONROE - Green County wants its share of the economic stimulus pie.
Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil said the county has applied for more than $2 million to rehabilitate or construct six bridges and more than $2.5 million to repave roads in the county.
The six bridges are located on County E, north of Albany; County F, east of Brodhead; County K; in Cadiz township on Ullom Road; County D; and on Poplar Grove Road. All of the bridges were in the county's four-year bridge repair program. They would have been repaired in 2001 and 2012.
The work could be done next year if the county gets stimulus money, Cecil said.
The road work from the stimulus would include County S to Wisconsin 69 with the exception of the section of road that goes through Juda.
Normally for work done on county roads, Green County pays for 20 percent of bridge and road repairs, while the state pays the other 80 percent. If work is done on a township road, the county and township each pay 10 percent.
Cecil said the county decided to apply for 100 percent of the cost of the work. He said he doesn't know how much money the county could get or if it will receive any money at all.
"We won't know if we're going to get any money until June or July," he said.
In addition to money for roads and bridges, the county has also applied for stimulus money to help purchase five new patrol trucks.
Cecil said some of the stimulus money is meant to help reduce diesel fuel emissions from older trucks. The newer diesel engines run cleaner, Cecil said.
The federal government will pay up to 25 percent of the cost of a new patrol truck if the engine from the old truck is damaged beyond repair.
The highway department already planned to replace five trucks and expected to receive $5,000 from each of them as part of the trade-in for the new trucks.
With the stimulus money, the county could receive $180,000 for the five trucks, as long as the engines can't be repaired. A new patrol truck costs about $140,000.
