MONROE - To reduce the population at the Green County Jail, the sheriff's department will begin offering electronic monitoring for some of the jail's inmates.
The jail can hold 68 inmates, and the average inmate count for the month of May was 56.
"When you get to 85 percent capacity, then you are considered full," Lt. Paul Weichbrod of the Green County Sheriff's Department said.
Weichbrod gave a tour to Green County Board of Supervisors interested in viewing the jail Tuesday prior to the monthly Green County Board of Supervisors' meeting.
Electronic monitoring will be introduced to the sheriff's department around July 1. The department has been training with the program the past week or so, Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud said.
"It's going to be a great option for us to get our jail population down," Skatrud said to the Green County Law Enforcement and Public Safety committee. The committee held its monthly meeting Tuesday prior to the tour.
There is a $20 processing fee, as well as a fee of $15 per day for the bracelet that individuals will have to pay up front for a two-week period. The bracelet pays for themselves, Skatrud said.
Skatrud said that he met with the Green County Circuit Court judges and they are not entirely thrilled with the new devices.
"They are not 100 percent sure of this deal yet, because they sentenced (the inmates) to jail," Skatrud said.
Not everyone would be approved for this program. For example, some people sentenced for drunk driving or nonviolent crimes may be able to use the monitoring system, Skatrud said.
The monitoring device will measure alcohol intake through sweat and will have a GPS system as a separate attachment.
