MONROE - The Monroe Police Department is seeking information about three suspects who used counterfeit $100 bills at 11 Monroe businesses on Monday. The incidents occurred between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

MPD Chief Fred Kelley said in a news release that three African American men were observed on video surveillance using the alleged counterfeit bills. The men were also believed to be traveling in a silver Toyota Matrix, possibly a 2005 or 2006 model.

According to the release, the men entered each business to make small purchases using the $100 bills. The businesses were later contacted by banking institutions advising that the bills were counterfeit. Each bill had the same serial number.

Similar incidents have been reported across southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois communities. Kelley is asking that any person with knowledge of the three suspects or who can identify the vehicle of interest should call MPD at 608-329-2400 or Green County Crimestoppers 1-800-422-7463. Callers could be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of this crime.
