MONROE - The Green County coroner's position remains open after Kris Hasse's departure in January.
According to Wisconsin State Statute, a coroner who resigns can only be replaced by an appointment by the governor until the coroner's seat is up for election. Gov. Scott Walker's office has made no recommendation on filling the position.
Green County Clerk Mike Doyle said he hasn't heard from the governor's office since January when it said it would no longer be accepting applications.
"They said they're not making an appointment at this time," he said.
A representative from the governor's office said the initial applicants were not recommended for an interview with the governor.
Doyle sent a letter to the governor's office back in November with a list of people who were interested in the position. Since then, Doyle and the governor's office have communicated very little, he said. He wrote in the letter that he hopes the position will not remain vacant for very long.
"For many months," he said, "I haven't heard from the governor's office."
A coroner's duties are, but not limited to, determining the cause of death within their legal jurisdiction; calling for forensic specialists to perform additional services such as an autopsy or toxicology testing; and serving as the primary contact for families of the deceased.
Hasse resigned in late November just weeks after being re-elected to the position, citing family issues.
The coroner's office is currently being run by five deputy coroners.
