PLATTEVILLE — A 40-year-old Platteville man faces four sets of charges.

An arrest warrant was issued for Herman W. Schwartz III on burglary of a building or dwelling, theft of up to 10 pieces of mail, theft of up to $2,500 in movable property and three counts of felony bail jumping, for an incident Oct. 8.

All the charges have repeat-offender sentence enhancements.

Schwartz is also charged with misappropriating ID information to obtain money as a repeat offender and felony bail jumping.

A stolen debit card was reported to Platteville police Aug. 21.

An arrest warrant was issued after Schwartz failed to appear in court for his initial appearance Nov. 20, according to court records.

Schwartz has an additional felony bail jumping charge after he failed to appear in court for an Oct. 11 status conference on charges of party to burglary as a repeat offender and party to misdemeanor theft of up to $2,500 as a repeat offender.

Schwartz waived his preliminary hearing July 31 and stood mute to the charges. Not-guilty pleas were entered on Schwartz’s behalf.

A caller to Platteville police reported a theft July 25.

The other defendant in the case, Jeremy J. Hefel, 43, Cuba City, was placed on three years probation after he pleaded guilty Nov. 8 to party to burglary as a habitual criminal. A charge of party to misdemeanor theft of up to $2,500 as a repeat offender was dismissed but read in for sentencing.

Probation conditions include bans on possessing or consuming alcohol and controlled substance, participation in substance abuse counseling, and maintaining a job or seeking work.

Hefel was placed on two years probation April 24 after he pleaded guilty to Lafayette County charges of theft of up to $2,500 in movable property and criminal damage to property for a July 2022 incident and misdemeanor bail jumping for an August 2022 incident. Hefel’s probation was revoked July 14, and he was sentenced to six months in jail with work-release privileges, according to court records.

Hefel pleaded no contest April 24 to a Lafayette County theft of up to $2,500 in movable property for an incident in May 2022 and was ordered to pay restitution and fined $200 plus court costs. 

Schwartz was sentenced to 30 days jail after he pleaded guilty Sept. 6 to misdemeanor theft of up to $2,500 as a repeat offender for a July 2022 incident.

Schwartz was placed on two years probation in May 2022 after he pleaded no contest to felony bail jumping and theft of mail for a February 2022 incident.

Schwartz was placed on three years probation, with 45 days in jail, in lieu of 18 months in prison and 18 months extended supervision in April 2022 after he pleaded no contest to five counts of misappropriating ID information to obtain money. Charges of misdemeanor theft and credit card theft by acquisition were dismissed but read in for sentencing, according to court records.

Hefel was sentenced to two years probation, including 30 days in jail, in lieu of two years in prison and two years extended supervision after he pleaded guilty March 15 to misdemeanor theft of up to $2,500, and three counts of misappropriating ID information to obtain money, for an incident Nov. 13. Four counts each of felony bail jumping and misdemeanor bail jumping were dismissed, according to court records.
